Brief History of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Commission (NSCDC)

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Commission popularly called Civil Defense is a paramilitary agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Established in 1967, the Civil Defense was created as a result of the Nigerian Civil War outbreak as at that time. The main goal and objective of this organization were to protect and sensitize the civil populace.

At that time, the paramilitary organization was called the Lagos Civil Defence Committee. In 1970, this committee was later developed in to Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

In the beginning, the main role of the Corps was to organize some enlightenment and educational campaigns in and around Lagos, being the Federal Capital Territory at the time.

However, in 1984, the Corps evolved into a national security outfit and by 1988; they had passed through several restructurings giving rise to the establishment of State Commands across the Federation including the FCT, Abuja.

In addition, in 2003, during the then President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo passed the bill to empower the Corps with statutory functions in to law.

And this made sure that they were charged with so many responsibilities like providing safety to the Nigerian citizens, protection from any forms of disaster; natural or artificial, protection against terrorist attacks, etc.

They are also empowered with the right to institute any legal proceedings on any person suspected to have commit an offence. The corps equally maintains an armed squad that possesses fire arms and ammunition.

Lastly, the Nigerian Civil Defence Commission vision is to work efficiently with humility and integrity in the course of discharging their national duty and to bring credibility and trust into the concept of Nigerian security.

The Nigerian Civil Defense Corps Salary Structure

The Nigerian Civil Defence Corps ranks are akin to that of the Military forces. They have the same chain of commands, that is to say the highest rank in the NSCDC Agency is the Commandant General while the Assistant Cadet is the least.

Hence, the Nigerian Civil Defense salary structure is majorly based on the position or rank of the officer in question. Usually, an officer with a degree certificate will be placed on level 8.

Any officer with Higher National Diploma certificates will be placed on level 7. However, legal practitioners (lawyers) are usually placed on level 9, medical doctors are placed on level 12 and masters degree holders on level 9.

  • Level 10 – Deputy Superintendent Cadre II

NOTE THAT: the levels and ranks of the civil defense officers will be increasing gradually through promotion or when they obtain additional qualification.

Each rank or level reports directly to the person above him. Thus, you must note that the Commandant General i.e. the General overseer of the commission will be appointed by the President.

  • Assistant Superintendent Cadre II – N858,956 – N986,991 per year.
  • Assistant Superintendent Cadre I – N939,310 – N1,056,416 per year.
  • Deputy Superintendent Cadre II – N1,012,562 – N1,143,539 per year.
  • Superintendent Cadre II – N1,094,027 – N1,252,038 per year.
  • Chief Superintendent Cadre II – N1,158,172 – N1,325,234 per year.
  • Assistant Commander – N1,225,584 – N1,405,449 per year.
  • Deputy Commander – N1,619,447 – N1,825,589 per year.
  • Chief Commander – N1,759,921 – N1,966,281 per year.
